Information

Who is eligible for this visa (VITEM I)?

  • Scientists, professors, researchers for stays longer than 90 days.

    Please note: If the applicant will not be receiving any honorarium for his/her presentation, and stay no more than 90 days, please apply for a Tourist Visa.
  • Scientists, professors, researchers and other professionals intending to participate in science and technology cooperation projects with a Brazilian institution, working within foreign educational or research and development institutions without a work contract in Brazil.

    Please note: Professors, scientists, researchers engaged in scientific and technical cooperation program must obtain from the Brazilian party an authorization from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - CNPq and from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation - MCTI prior to applying for the visa. This requirement can be waived if the project is sponsored by a research grant from CNPq, CAPES, FINEP or other official State Foundation supporting research activities.
  • Technician, contractor, volunteer, specialist, scientist and researcher linked to official entities, private or non-governmental under the shelter of a cooperation agreement recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations.
  • Students intending to attend regular courses held by organizations dedicated to student exchange programs. Example: Rotary International.

    Please note: If the applicant will be enrolled in undergraduate/graduate studies, a Student Visa (VITEM IV) may apply.
  • Amateur athletes over 14 and under 21 years of age, intending to take part in unpaid sport training program in Brazil. Applicant must already have been enrolled in similar programs in its country of residence.
  • Persons intending to provide voluntary services to a religious entity, to a social services organization or to a non-profit non-governmental organization – NGO.
  • Foreign citizens employed by a foreign entity intending to undertake professional training at a Brazilian branch, subsidiary, or the headquarters of an entity belonging to the same economic conglomerate.
  • Persons intending to go to Brazil for a medical treatment.

Please notice:

  • Employment in Brazil is prohibited for holders of this type of visa.
  • Please be reminded that a legalized/apostilled birth certificate translated in Portuguese should be presented while registering at the Federal Police Station in Brazil

Photo Specifications

All photos must meet the requirements listed below. If these requirements have not been met, the applicant will have to deliver a new photo that meets the requirements. The photo requirements are the same for children as for adults.

The Photo shall:

  • Be in sharp focus, clear and with appropriate brightness and contrast
  • be printed on high quality photo-paper with high resolution
  • be in colours with white background
  • be 40-50 mm in width
  • Should be recent and no more than 6 months old
  • full-face, facing the camera directly, eyes looking straight at the camera
  • show the whole head and the top of the shoulders. The face shall occupy 70-80 % of the picture
  • show open eyes that are clearly visible. Hair shall not cover the eyes

Regarding glasses:

Glasses are allowed as long as the eyes are clearly visible.

  • the glasses cannot be coloured
  • the rim must not cover any part of the eyes
  • there cannot be reflection in the glasses

Regarding head-dress:

Religious head-dresses are allowed provided that all details of the face are clearly shown.

  • Chin, forehead and both cheeks shall all be clearly visible
  • Shadows in the face due to the head-dress are not allowed

Processing Time

Processing time varies depending on the type of visa and is entirely at the discretion of the Embassy / Consulate. Applicants applying as part of a group may have a lengthier processing time. Please plan your visa application well in advance to your intended travel date to avoid any disappointments. Usually it takes about 10 (ten) working days, after submitting all documents fully in compliant with the Embassy / Consulate requirement.

The estimated processing time does not include:

  • The time an application is withheld by a travel or visa agency;
  • The time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents required by the Consular Section;

Visa Form: The online visa application form is available at https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br. The application form should be filled–out online and the Visa Application Receipt (RER) should be printed out. The visa application form expires one month after it was filled out;
